Following the success of the “Checker Neyland” movement in Week 6 against Florida, Tennessee fans are planning a similar idea for the team’s season finale at Vanderbilt on Nov. 29. On Sunday night, a comment on 247Sports.com’s Vols message board called for Tennessee fans to checker Vanderbilt Stadium with orange and white sections.

Fans later found a seating map and began diagramming which sections would wear each color. As of 5:30 p.m. Monday, #CheckerVandy was trending on Twitter and had been used 147 times. Tweets containing the phrase were retweeted 828 times.

A recent New York Times college football fan map, which was based on Facebook page likes, reported that Tennessee fans outnumber Vanderbilt fans 22.3 percent to 21.3 percent in Davidson County, which includes Nashville and surrounding areas. The Vols– whose campus is an estimate drive of under three hours away– tend to see large turnouts in fan support when they visit Nashville every other year.

Vanderbilt has won the past two meetings between the two programs but just three in the past 31 years.
