When Tennessee kicks off the 2017 season, it will likely do so with freshman Trey Smith starting at one of the five offensive line spots.

The former 5-star signee has had a great summer of practice and is drawing rave reviews, even from coaches who are no longer on the staff.

Former Tennessee OL coach Doug Matthews said on Midday 180 on 104.5 The Score in Nashville this week that not only is Smith in line to start, but he’s one of the best linemen on the roster already (via RockyTopInsider.com):

“Trey Smith is already the leader of the offensive line,” Matthews said. “He is a mean, nasty practice player. Great off the field, but mean on it.”

The Vols have plenty of offensive linemen who can play significant snaps this season, but Matthews says none are better than Smith.

That’s high praise for the true freshman, but if anyone can live up to the hype, it’s him.
