Tennessee has officially racked up its first NCAA violation under head coach Jeremy Pruitt.

According to the Knox News Sentinel, a Tennessee athletic department staff member donated single-game football tickets for a Knoxville Catholic auction that aimed to raise money for the school’s academic programs and classroom technology.

This violated NCAA bylaw 13.15.1, which states that a university cannot pay for the costs of prospective athlete’s education or other expenses. It also violated bylaw 13.15.1.2, which states that a university cannot provide funding to benefit a high school athletic program.

The self-reported infraction was among six that Tennessee has in 2018, however, only one involved the football program. Each of them were a Level III infraction, and don’t typically carry any kind of major punishment with it.

Tennessee’s Associate Athletics Director for Compliance Andrew Donovan provided the following statement to the paper following the news:

“Level III violations are a byproduct of a healthy compliance program. There are thousands of NCAA rules and interpretations of those rules, so it is expected that inadvertent, minor violations may occur on occasion.

“We have a strong culture of compliance at the University of Tennessee. Our coaches and staff are fully committed to doing things the right way. They view compliance as a shared responsibility and hold themselves and each other accountable.”
