It’s a good thing Tennessee should claim three touted quarterbacks in the 2015 class.

It’s looking more and more like the Vols will need one of them to back up Josh Dobbs this season. Backup Nathan Peterman is visiting Pitt this weekend and strongly considering a transfer, according to Panther-Lair.com.

Peterman, a four-star member of the 2012 class, is 20-of-43 passing for an abysmal 2.2 yards per attempt. He started one game in each of the last two seasons.

Before leaving for an NFL job, former offensive coordinator Mike Bajakian told the media Peterman had given him no indication of a pending transfer.

If the 6-foot-2, 225-pound redshirt junior to be does leave, the Vols must develop one of the incoming freshmen in a hurry in case Dobbs gets hurt. At quarterback, the current roster includes Devin Smith, a preferred walk-on who redshirted as a freshman last season, Jauan Jennings, a four-star dual-threat early enrollee, and Quinten Dormady, a four-star pro-style early enrollee. Another four-star dual-threat guy, Sheriron Jones, is committed to Tennessee as part of the 2015 class as well.

Peterman could be a graduate transfer with immediate eligibility at Pitt if he did transfer, and could challenge Chad Voytik for the starting job. Current Panthers offensive coordinator Jim Chaney held the same position in Knoxville from 2009-12 and helped recruit Peterman to UT.
