Well, it certainly was an interesting first season for Jimbo Fisher as head coach at Texas A&M. From a tough loss to Clemson to the end, with a record-setting seven OT victory, the Aggies provided an exciting brand of football.

At 8-4 the Aggies will go bowling, and after outlasting LSU, they finish second in the SEC West and look like a program on the rise.

Here are 10 things we’ll remember most from the 2018 season.

10. Fisher’s first SEC road victory

Texas A&M jumped to a 13-0 lead on the road but then needed a 10-point fourth quarter to break a 16-16 tie and hold off South Carolina, 26-23. It was Fisher’s first SEC road win and added another building block for the direction the program is headed.

9. Fisher’s first victory over a ranked team

The Aggies snapped a six-game losing streak to AP Top 25 opponents, including losses earlier this season to No. 1 Alabama and No. 2 Clemson, with a 20-14 overtime victory over No. 13 Kentucky at Kyle Field. The previously unbeaten Wildcats were hoping to improve to 6-0 for the first time since 1950.

8. Facing No. 1 Alabama

Texas A&M’s 45-23 loss to No. 1 Alabama doesn’t sound like much, but the 22-point margin was the closest any team came to the undefeated Tide all season. Alabama led 14-10 early in the second quarter then pulled away with 10 points for a 31-13 lead at halftime.

7. Near miss with No. 2 Clemson

Quarterback Kellen Mond nearly pulled off a spectacular second-half comeback against No. 2 Clemson. He threw for a career-high 430 yards and three second-half touchdowns to get the Aggies within 28-26. But a potential tying two-point conversion pass failed and Texas A&M had to settle for a moral victory.

6. Jimbo’s big debut

Trayveon Williams rushed for 240 yards, second-most in school history, and the Aggies set records in Fisher’s debut, a 59-7 victory over Northwestern State at Kyle Field. Texas A&M set a school record and tied a conference mark with 40 first downs and the Aggies piled up more than 700 yards of offense.

5. The nation’s top punter

Ray Guy Award finalist Braden Mann developed into a real weapon. The nation’s leading punter finished the regular season with a 51.15 average per punt. With a bowl game remaining is on pace to break the NCAA and SEC season record of 50.28 set by LSU’s Chad Kessler in 1997.

4. Mond emerges

Still developing as a dependable quarterback, Kellen Mond put the team on his shoulders in an epic 74-72 seven-OT season finale victory over LSU on Saturday at Kyle Field. He threw a career-high six touchdown passes, second-most by an Aggie in a game. Mond threw for 2,967 yards and 23 touchdowns in the regular season and appears headed for a 3,000-yard passing season.

3. Aggies use of the tight end

Jace Sternberger, a 2018 Mackey Award semifinalist as the nation’s best tight end, had two TD catches against LSU. That gives him 10 in 2018, extending his own school record for a tight end. Sternberger led the Aggies in the regular season with 47 receptions for 804 yards. He averaged 17.1 yards per catch.

2. Trayveon Williams, SEC’s top running back

In 37 career games, Williams has rushed for 3,379 yards, third-most on the Aggies’ all-time list behind Darren Lewis (5,012 yards, 1987-90) and Curtis Dickey (3,703, 1976-79). Williams finished the 2018 season with a conference-best 1,524 yards, third-most in a single season at Texas A&M.

1. The Game of the Year

Fisher’s first season was punctuated by Saturday’s record-setting 74-72 seven OT victory over No. 8 LSU at Kyle Field. It snapped a seven-game losing streak to the Tigers, dating back to 1995, and showed how far the program has come in a year. But more important, it displayed a mental and physical toughness that is the foundation for things to come. The seven overtimes tied for most in a FBS game. The combined 146 points set an FBS record.
