The Vanderbilt Commodores suffered their fourth loss of the season in a 17-7 defeat by Kentucky in Lexington. The Wildcats dominated with a 384-139 margin in total yards and a 38:22-21:38 edge in time of possession. Both teams combined for three turnovers a piece and struggled on third down.

Here’s five takeaways from Saturday’s game:

1. Vanderbilt needs Patton Robinette: Patton Robinette missed Saturday’s game with a concussion. Wade Freebeck, who made his third appearance of the season, struggled with three interceptions and just 85 yards passing. Robinette has provided Vanderbilt with its only solid option at quarterback when healthy. For the Commodores to succeed, the sophomore must return to a struggling lineup.

2. Ralph Webb needs more carries: Ralph Webb has been Vanderbilt’s only consistent bright spot this season. He leads the Commodores with 378 yards and a touchdown on 77 attempts. But on Saturday, Webb saw limited action with just 44 yards on 13 attempts. Vanderbilt needs to center its offense around the redshirt freshman, especially in games where they only face a 10-point deficit.

3. Defense is far ahead of offense: Vanderbilt’s defense looks far superior to its offense. Though Kentucky quarterback Patrick Towles saw an efficient performance, the Commodores forced three turnovers and held the Wildcats to just 17 points. This should come as no surprise with former Stanford defensive coordinator Derek Mason at the helm. The defensive-minded coach has kept a solid defense, but must see improvement on the opposite side.

4. Darrius Sims is a gamer: Darrius Sims managed to keep single-handedly keep Vanderbilt in contention for the second consecutive week. After returning two kicks for touchdowns against South Carolina, Sims added a 20-yard interception touchdown on Saturday that provided Vanderbilt with its only score. Sims has made a splash in recent weeks, despite his team’s struggles to score otherwise.

5. Vanderbilt still has a long way to go: Vanderbilt’s offense is its biggest flaw. The Commodores have been kept out of the end zone in three-of-five games played. Vandy’s turnover margin remains at -6 and doesn’t look to improve without Robinette in at quarterback. Derek Mason has plenty of work ahead of him entering a road matchup against No. 12 Georgia.
