Here’s how Vanderbilt graded in its Week 7 win over Charleston Southern.

OFFENSE: D

Vanderbilt was held scoreless in the second half by an FCS defense. The Commodores threw for 189 passing yards and rushed for a combined 106. Johnny McCrary played more efficient than his previous appearance, which saw him throw three interceptions on 0-for-3 passing. Vanderbilt looked far from an SEC caliber offense on Saturday, which was shown by the final score.

DEFENSE: C-

Vanderbilt allowed 389 total yards on Saturday. The Bucs combined for 199 yards and a touchdown on 41 rushing attempts. However, the defense managed to keep Vanderbilt ahead, despite a late-game rally by Charleston Southern. Overall, it was an average performance, but nothing spectacular.

SPECIAL TEAMS: F

Vanderbilt allowed a 17-yard blocked punt return for a touchdown with 0:38 left in the first half. This marked the fifth time the Commodores gave up a score with 0:40 or less remaining in the second quarter. The play swung momentum in Charleston Southern’s favor, which was evident in a 10-0 second half.

COACHING: D

Derek Mason and his staff struggled against an FCS team at home. The Commodores were outmatched by what should be a far inferior team. While holding a lead, the Commodores did all they could to hand Charleston Southern the victory. With a slim lead, Vanderbilt turned the ball over and gave the Bucs several extra possessions. However, the final drive was an example of solid play calling to drain the clock and secure a close win.

OVERALL: D-

From top to bottom, Vanderbilt is struggling. The quarterback situation is in shambles and the skill positions are inconsistent. The Commodores continue to allow costly plays that should be avoided. Vanderbilt is entering a much needed bye week and should address these issues moving forward. The Commodores need to improve these mistakes before returning to action against Missouri on Oct. 25.
