The 2014 Vanderbilt offense can be best summed up in two words: “Ralph Webb.” Webb was the one bright spot on the SEC’s worst offensive unit in 2014.

The Gainesville, Fla., native set a new school freshman rushing record with 907 yards on 212 carries, ranking ninth in the conference with 75.6 yards per game. Webb also provided the Commodores with four touchdowns and averaged 4.3 yards per carry.

On Monday, head coach Derek Mason announced former Wisconsin assistant Andy Ludwig as the team’s new offensive coordinator. Ludwig has worked as a D1 offensive coordinator since 1997. The former wide receiver spent the past two seasons with the Badgers, also serving as the team’s quarterbacks coach.

Wisconsin ranked No. 3 overall in rushing offense and No. 22 in total offense. Running back Melvin Gordon led the nation with 2,336 yards and 26 touchdowns on 309 attempts, finishing second for the Heisman Trophy.

The move is a no-brainer for Vanderbilt, who needs to build its offense around Webb as the feature back. It also bodes well for Mason, who saw past success as a defensive coordinator at Stanford, whose offense was also run-oriented.

Mason also announced that he will take over as his own defensive coordinator in 2015. The Commodores looked flat on defense, but the bigger issue was the offense’s inability to control time of possession.

If Vanderbilt can make a transition to a run-heavy offense, the team should see a defensive improvement with Mason’s scheme. Webb has the talent to wear down defenses and the Commodores should see an offensive improvement with their game plan focused on the rising redshirt sophomore.

Also, in case you hadn’t noticed, Vanderbilt’s quarterbacks were abysmal in 2014. All four players listed on the Commodores’ depth chart made starts and the team made more than 10 quarterback chances, which accounted for four total wins.

Vanderbilt must see similar success to Ludwig’s Wisconsin teams and Mason’s Stanford teams in 2014. For that to happen, the Commodores must focus on making Webb their feature back and increasing his amount of carries in 2015.
