Vanderbilt’s offense has looked competent under one set of circumstances this season: Patton Robinette behind center.

The Commodores got good news Friday when the team’s medical staff cleared Robinette to play. He will be in uniform Saturday against Missouri, but hasn’t practiced since suffering a concussion Sept. 20 against South Carolina.

Coach Derek Mason announced redshirt freshman Johnny McCrary as Saturday’s starter earlier this week. McCrary will become the fourth different quarterback to start for Vanderbilt this season. The team has changed quarterbacks 10 times due to injuries or poor performance.

Robinette in all likelihood will be ready to play Nov. 1 against Old Dominion, giving Vanderbilt (2-5, 0-4) a good chance at a third win. Robinette is 23 of 32 for 240 yards and has accounted for three touchdowns against zero turnovers this season, but he left two of three games due to injury, including the season opener against Temple.

The other three quarterbacks — McCrary, Stephen Rivers and Wade Freebeck — have combined for two touchdown passes and 11 interceptions.

“Once he goes through the protocol for what our doctors have in store and he’s cleared, then what we’ll do is go about the protocol football-wise of a player having to be in shape (after) missing some time,” Mason said of Robinette during Tuesday’s press conference. “You have to be in shape to step back out there. It’s not like you just step back into the fold and say, ‘OK, you’re our quarterback.’ But he is our leader and we are anxiously awaiting his time back with this team.”

McCrary completed 10 of 16 passes in a 21-20 win against Charleston Southern two weeks ago before Vanderbilt’s bye.

Rivers (ankle) and Freebeck (finger) aren’t 100 percent, but should be available Saturday as well should Mason get an itchy trigger finger.

McCrary didn’t sound particularly confident.

“When I step on the field, I can only do my best,” he said, according to the Nashville Tennesseean. “If my best isn’t good enough, I’ll take myself out of the game. You can tell if you’re not moving this team, but I want to stay tough and maybe something special will happen.”
