This year’s signing day only intensified the Alabama / Auburn rivalry, if you can believe it. Before you say there is no chance it could get even testier, let me say that I believe you. I know you both hate each other with a passion, and both of you want to run the state of Alabama.
Brent Calloway was committed to Alabama early on. Nick Saban wanted him to play linebacker. Then, Gene Chizik came along, and he wanted Calloway to play some running back for the Tigers. Calloway loved the idea because he secretly wanted to play offense; so, he swapped his commitment to Auburn. However, on signing day, Calloway flipped back to Alabama. Apparently, Nick Saban said he’s going to give him a shot to play some running back. Little did Calloway know, he was toying with the hearts and pride of both Auburn and Alabama’s tradition(s). Auburn is heated at Alabama right now, to say the least.
An even better example is Cyrus Kouandjio. Kounanjio is a stud of an offensive lineman from Maryland whose brother plays for Alabama. He chose Auburn on NSD but didn’t send his LOI to Alabama until the following weekend.
Supposedly, Kouandjio’s family was set to have a “vote” on where he would go to school. If that is how he chose the school, tallying votes, that is just sad stuff. I don’t care who you pledge your allegiance to.
Both schools are accusing the other of cheating. For Auburn, it’s Calloway and Kouandjio. For Alabama, it’s Cam Newton.
This rivalry is very heated, and the heat is increasing every day and after every season – especially after the last two years and the last two National Championships.
You’ve gotta love the SEC!
