Bobby Petrino is the head football coach at the University of Arkansas. He is at best, a middle-of-the-pack coach in the SEC, a conference that is stacked with coaches like Nick Saban, Steve Spurrier and even Les Miles. Look at the turmoil Mark Richt is under right now at Georgia, but he’s still a lot better coach than Petrino. Richt has won multiple SEC Championships and BCS games in the past. How many has Petrino won? Only one, and that came while he was in the Big East at Louisville.
Here are 8 facts (there are many more, add your own Petrino facts/opinions in the comments section) that prove Petrino is overrated:
1.) 16.48 Miles
Petrino’s defenses have given up an average of 4,149 yards per season. Over his seven-year career, Petrino has yielded over 29,000 total yards, or 16.48 total miles. That’s more than a half marathon and more than likely farther than Bobby could run. I know Petrino is known for his offense, but his defensive teams have been downright forgettable over his career.
2.) 269 Penalties
Arkansas has recorded 269 penalties in the past 3 seasons. Petrino’s Razorbacks had the 6th highest number of penalties in the NCAA last year with 103 for 831 yards. His teams consistently rank near the top of college football in the category most often used to describe ‘undisciplined’ teams.
3.) Outscored 41-108
Petrino has been outscored by 67 points in his 3 meetings with the Alabama Crimson Tide, allowing 108 points and only scoring 41 with his ‘high octane’ offense when playing their talented defense. Needless to say, he is 0-3 against this top tier team in the SEC, which is why Arkansas will remain a second tier team and why they are overpaying their head coach.
4.) 9.5 years
The amount of time still left on Petrino’s contract at Louisville when he walked away. That was in 2006, so yes, he was under contract to be their coach until after the 2016 football season. That’s still 5 years from now…
5.) 25.7 Points Per Game
In the 3 years Bobby Petrino has been the coach at Arkansas, he has allowed 950 points on defense. In 37 games, that’s an average of 25.7 points per game. When you consider the cupcakes he schedules each year, that statistic sounds even worse.
6.) 0 Championships
This is the most important statistic for any SEC football coach – championships. Petrino has won zero SEC Championships and zero National Championships. You will not be considered among the league’s best coaches if you cannot bring home the trophies. Nick Saban, Les Miles, Steve Spurrier, and even Gene Chizik are all top tier coaches in this league, leaving Petrino as an overpaid second tier coach.
7.) $3.56 Million
Bobby Petrino’s current contract at Arkansas pays him a salary of $3.56 MILLION per year. Can you honestly say he is not overpaid?
8.) 3-10 Record
The Atlanta Falcons had a record of 3-10 under Petrino before he walked out with 3 games remaining in the season. If you forget that moment in football history, allow a member of his staff, Mike Zimmer, to recall it for you:
“I was never even there. As far as I am concerned. I never even was there. When a coach quits in the middle of the year and ruins a bunch of people’s families and doesn’t have enough guts to at least finish out the year — I am not a part of that.
“He is a coward. Put that in quotes. He ruined a bunch of people’s lives, a bunch of people’s families, kids, because he didn’t have enough nuts to stay there and finish the job. That’s the truth.
“Most people in football have enough courage about them and enough fight to stick through something and not quit halfway through the year. It is cowardly. He came in and said he resigned, he would talk to us all at a later date, walked out of the office and no one has ever talked to him since. Not that anybody wanted to.
“He’s a gutless b——-d. Quote that. I don’t give a s——.”
