The SEC West had a very tough day yesterday. Three major news items hit, with the dismissal of Tyrann Mathieu being the biggest news story since Bama won the national championship.

But the SEC West also faced two other items of interest.

Tyrann Mathieu dismissed

LSU cut ties with Mathieu over speculated failed drug tests that were confirmed by a source close to Mathieu. Mathieu was ready to avenge his loss in the national championship to Bama and prove he was worthy of all the preseason hype. And while Mathieu isn’t the best cover corner, there is no denying his playmaking ability in the secondary and on punt returns.

I’m not sure it will affect LSU all that much because they have recruited so well, and the defensive line is one of the best in the country. The nasty line has the ability to make an average corner look great.

It’s refreshing to see a coach uphold his program’s values and prove that one player is not bigger than the team. Some coaches would just look the other way.

Travell Dixon leaves Alabama

Travell Dixon was in a battle with fellow JUCO transfer Deion Belue and John Fulton for the starting corner spot opposite Dee Milliner. This isn’t a killer blow, but it does hurt for depth reasons for the Tide, as Dixon did expect to see playing time until the position was settled. Still, Belue looked to have had an edge on Dixon thus far. Dixon cited ‘personal reasons’ for leaving the Tide.

“Travell Dixon has decided to leave the team for personal reasons,” Nick Saban said. “We certainly hate to see any player leave our program, but we understand the situation and we wish him the best of luck in the future.”

Alabama will be fine without Dixon in the secondary.

Auburn RB Jovon Robinson not practicing for academic impropriety

In a weird twist of events, Auburn freshman running back Jovon Robinson was held out of practice Friday because the university needed to review his transcript for academic impropriety. His high school guidance counselor admitted to creating a fraudulent transcript for Robinson.

The high school counselor resigned, and the investigation is ongoing.

Can we just start football already and get this tough preseason over with?
