UGA OC Mike Bobo: We’ll be ready for the South Carolina game
The Georgia, South Carolina yearly bout has taken the place as the premier early season game in the SEC East, replacing the nasty late 90’s rivalry between Florida and Tennessee.
And South Carolina and Steve Spurrier have been a thorn in Georgia’s side. The Bulldogs are losers of three straight, and they are looking for some revenge coming off last year’s 35-7 meltdown in Williams Brice Stadium.
Georgia offensive coordinator Mike Bobo, as the keynote speaker Thursday night at the UGA Day in Savannah Rapids Pavilion, joked about how his offense would contain All-World defensive end Jadeveon Clowney, and he riled up the fans, promising them Georgia will be ready for South Carolina in week two, via Athens Banner-Herald.
“I think we’re going to do the old Burt Reynolds’ Longest Yard and not block and let (Aaron Murray) throw it as hard as he can at him,” Bobo said, laughing. “We’ve got to realize he’s going to make some plays. We’ll do some things to try to discourage him. Maybe he’ll change his mind, think he needs to sit out and turn pro.
“I think our guys are eager to play that game [South Carolina],” Bobo said. “We were obviously embarrassed that game and got thoroughly whipped by that defense. We’ll be ready for that game. I promise you.”
The loser of South Carolina, Georgia has only made it to Atlanta two times, and this year, just like in years past, the winner will emerge as the SEC East’s early favorite. In 2012, with the addition of Texas A&M and Missouri, the game was moved from its normal week two slot to week six. But this year it returns to week two, giving us a premier impact game right off the bat.
Bobo and Georgia’s offense are coming off a record year. The Bulldogs averaged 37.97 points per game, the highest of the Mark Richt era. And UGA has arguably the sexiest, most balanced offense returning this fall, led by Aaron Murray, Todd Gurley and the entire offensive line. In fact, Georgia scored 69 offensive touchdowns in 2012 and 54 (78.3 percent) return in ‘13.
