Alabama’s iconic uniforms are borderline untouchable, but that doesn’t mean the Crimson Tide aren’t willing to let Nike spruce it up a bit with creative baselayers and gameday accessories.

There’s a limit of course.

You can expect elephant-print undershirts and two-color cleats this fall, but the black alternates that were teased earlier this month aren’t happening — at least under Nick Saban’s watch.

Nike playfully teased Alabama’s new Mach Speed uniform set in last season’s College Football Playoff, but all we got was a fractal diamond-color Swoosh along with updated gloves and cleats.

In other words, no changes were made to Crimson Tide tradition.

Alabama’s minor makeover for the Playoff was its first apparel change in several years, joining a special 2012 BCS National Championship Game ensemble and a Pro Combat ‘houndstooth’ alternate in 2010.

Nike is paying the University of Alabama $780,000 in cash and providing $2.8 million worth of gear this year, according to the Portland Business Journal.
