Markail Benton, a 4-star outside linebacker from Central-Phenix City, Al., just announced at his high school moments ago that he has committed to Alabama. It was between Bama and Auburn — a typical offseason Iron Bowl for coaches Nick Saban and Gus Malzahn — and this particular in-state war went to the Crimson Tide.

Standing at an impressive 6-foot-2, 240 pounds, Benton ranks as the No. 6 overall player at his position in the 2016 recruiting class and is a top-three prospect from the state of Alabama, per 247Sports. He holds 19 total offers, but had narrowed it down to five potential suitors all the way back in March of 2015.

In two seasons at the varsity level (2014-15), Benton has recorded 119 tackles (10 for loss), 4.0 sacks and a forced fumble.

Auburn had been presumed to be the favorite during his entire recruiting process, but Alabama made a late push to make it close to a 50-50 decision, according to his 247Sports crystal ball predictions. Florida State was also a late candidate.

The addition of Benton gives Alabama 12 commits to this point, as the Tide are again making the case for another No. 1-ranked class in the nation.
