A post-USF Alabama Crimson Tide team should be a house of pain for Wisconsin
Through just a couple weeks of the college football season, there are just a finite amount of certainties observers casual or fanatic can draw. Yes, without question, Florida State is a mess. Yes, without question, Notre Dame is again way more hat than cattle.
And yes, once again, Alabama is squarely in position to be … well … Alabama for an umpteenth consecutive season.
The No. 4 Crimson Tide are 2-0 heading into a road test at high noon Saturday against the Wisconsin Badgers. Because the game will be at Camp Randall Stadium, “Jump Around” will be queued up for the start of the fourth quarter and all the Badgers fans will be making sure to be as unpleasant as possible toward their guests until then.
But there is a reason the Tide are 15.5-point road favorites (via DraftKings) against fellow unbeaten Wisconsin. It’s because Alabama is easily two touchdowns better than the unranked Badgers, despite what you might have seen just last weekend.
That’s because South Florida apparently has several handfuls of Crimson Tide-likeness voodoo dolls that the Bulls unleashed last season and last Saturday. How else can you explain the 17-3 rain-soaked “victory” by the Tide last year at Raymond James Stadium? How else can you explain USF dragging Alabama to the deep end of its home pool yet again in 2024 before succumbing 42-16?
USF coach Alex Golesh wasn’t about to accept any moral victories after either defeat, nor should he. Golesh commented that they had Alabama right where they wanted them through 3 quarters – right before the Tide unloaded with a 28-3 fourth quarter to send the Saban Field at Bryant-Denny Stadium (what a mouthful that is …) crowd home semi-satisfied.
And Golesh was dead-on correct in his analysis, just as he dialed up a winnable game plan in 2023.
Spinning this all forward to Wisconsin, though, bodes poorly for the Badgers. Last season, the Tide squeegee’d itself out and picked off 15th-ranked Ole Miss 24-10 the week after the Bulls charged their hardest. Yes, we all know that team isn’t this team, but both teams had Jalen Milroe in charge of the offense – and it was against the Rebels where Milroe finally started showing his bona fides.
Milroe was a crisp 17-of-21 for 225 yards and a touchdown that afternoon against the Rebels, and added 16 carries for 28 yards. More important, he showed the tenacity/poise combination that then-coach Nick Saban had been looking for out of him for the first time – and it was off to the races on a Heisman Trophy candidacy that continues to this day.
A year later, Milroe probably can’t even remember a time when he might have been looking over his shoulder when he was going to be yanked. His position as QB1 at Alabama is as locked in as Saban’s bronze statue out front. And that can’t help but to bode unwell for Wisconsin. The LANK-y graduate junior has thrown for 399 yards and 5 TDs through 2 games without an interception, and has rushed for 81 yards on 22 carries with 4 more scores. His command of new coach Kalen DeBoer’s offense seems pretty solid, even when said offense sputtered sometimes against South Florida. And Milroe’s confidence? Even a second consecutive close call from the Bulls did nothing to dim the glow emanating from No. 4.
Wisconsin won’t be a creampuff. That much is certain. The Badgers have thrown plenty of thorns in Big Ten sides over the years, and playing at Camp Randall has never been a garden party for opposing teams. Transfer quarterback Tyler Van Dyke seems to have found new life in Madison after being run out of Miami, and running back Chez Mellusi can flat go.
Still, Wisconsin needed to play 4 quarters to subdue Western Michigan 28-14 in the opener, and didn’t exactly light it up in a 27-13 victory over South Dakota last weekend. The Badgers are going to need more than a fancy stadium singalong participation gag to get past the best college football program in the past 25 years.
Buckle up, Wisconsin. Pack a lunch, and don’t forget the pudding snacks and an apple for extra energy. Sixty minutes of rebound is coming your way in the form of the post-USF Alabama Crimson Tide. And if past performance is indicative of future results, Camp Randall will be a house of pain Saturday afternoon for the Badgers.
Not a bad article.
Wisconsin isn’t even ranked. They received nine votes. Don’t embarrass again this week Alabama please.
How many votes did NC State get?
But we’ll get more hype next week when Nico is “Throwin’ Dots” against…Kent State?
It humorous, seriously funny…
when a Dawgs fan is ribbing a Vols fan about their Kent State game one week after the Dawgs just played, drum roll, please…
Tennessee Tech
Nig ga you stupid. What’s good bit ch? Your mom a h o!
Screw you bit ch.
Can’t believe Wasson’s article didn’t mention Wisconsin coach Luke Fickell…
Fickell’s Cincinnati team was the non-P5 team the “selection” committee “selected” to smoothly get Alabama to the CFP Final…
Fickell was the patsy Sankey and Company took advantage of in their two-bit hustle to get a for-all-the-marbles rematch game between Georgia/Alabama.
Fickell didn’t blip on Wasson’s radar; it may be because the Alabama/Cincinnati game was a yawner.
Hopefully the O-Line is healthy and Booker is back to his normal position. It was clear the line was having major problems communicating and protecting Milroe. This game will be a good measure of how well the O-Line will play.
OL issues are notoriously hard to solve once the season begins. Backups there are usually backups for valid reasons.
Proctor’s injury has nothing to do with what’s not working on the right side of the Tide’s OL. Hopefully, a solution is found before the Dawgs come calling a week from Saturday.
Proctor’s injury along with the Prichett injury and Booker not playing his normal position has everything to do with. Takes a lot of communication and timing to play OL. 3 starters not playing or playing a different position can cause trouble. This week should prove me correct.
They just aren’t very good
Heard that last year just before the SEC Championship game.
Your chump Deboer is going to get disgraced in Wisconsin this week. After that Georgia will destroy Alabama. Bottom line is that a few weeks from now you will be howling at the moon to fire Deboer. Thanks for taking him off our hands.
2020*
The awesome possum Kirby Smart’s stand down loss to Saban in the ’21 SEC CG did’t help the maraschino cherry in the ’23 SEC CG.
It is hilarious how much Saban and Bama lives in the heads of puppy fans. Take heart in knowing that Saban’s last win was over Georgia. Maybe that is why Georgia fans constantly live on Bama articles. 27-24 Enjoy puppy fans.
Well UW Husky fan, it is quite clear you are still mad that DeBoer accepted a promotion to coach Bama and left you so upset.
Don’t you have some new material? Ya’ll have been saying that for 10 years now and we’re still waiting!
Bad things happen when Southerners cross the Mason – Dixon line. Just ask your hero Robert E. Lee. Kalen Deboer is a fake, and you bought into it. Chris Peterson was responsible for Washington’s success last year as most of the key players were recruited by him. Jedd Fisch is a total improvement on Deboer. Thanks for taking him off our hands. All Deboer and Alabama know is how to buy players. Got news for you’Bama types. All your players care about is the large sums of money you paid them. They will quit on you when the chips are down. Wisconsin wins easy, and Alabama goes down South and will not venture North for a long time. Bunch of cowards.
You are unloved.
Still very upset that DeBoer took a promotion to coach blue blood Bama over staying with your mid-level Huskies team I see.
Every nigh insignificant game is being billed as the Super Bowl this season.
Wasson mentioned three coaches by name…
Luke Fickell wasn’t one of them; how could Wasson miss that storyline?
It was just a couple of years ago when the “selection” committee “selected” Luke Fickell’s non-P5 Cincinnati Bearcat team to be used as a doormat to let Alabama cakewalk into the CFP Final.
Alabama mauled Cincinnati in ’21 was the Oregon doused Liberty of ’23.
The impossible couldn’t happen in Wisconsin’s Camp Randall Stadium, could it? Nah, no way… but if there is a way, maybe Fickell takes it.
Or it could be that so many people make more money with less work.
Should be Bryant-Saban stadium. Denny has the chimes.
I don’t see Gator fans clamoring to rename Ben H. Griffin stadium to Steve Spurrier Stadium. Give it a rest. Without Denny, Bama is not a blue blood college football team.
I expect Alabama to win, but I expect them to struggle against Wisconsin. Alabama struggled with South Florida at home…they’ll struggle with Wisconsin on the road. The Badgers didn’t have to dial up a ton to win their first two games. A win is a win. If Alabama does indeed struggle again with the problems on the OL and the offense sputters for most of the day, it could be problematic going forward.
What happened to the next man up mentality rather than excusing poor play because of backups and out of normal position players?
ANY team could say the same thing.
Maybe DeBoer should have blamed the players and slammed his hand down on the press interview table rather than accepting responsibility for the poor O-Line play. Works for other coaches. Any idea who I am talking about corndog fan?
