Shaun Dion Hamilton had a tough end to his Alabama career. But perhaps his start in the NFL will be better.

Hamilton sustained season-ending knee injuries each of the last two seasons with the Crimson Tide — a right ACL tear in 2016 and a broken kneecap in the same knee in 2017.

Now with the Washington Redskins, Hamilton is off to a strong start in his first NFL training camp, according to ESPN.com’s John Keim.

“He’s quick to diagnose and react, as was evident on a handful of plays Saturday — especially on two plays in the red zone in which he helped make a short stop,” Keim wrote for ESPN on Saturday. “Hamilton also was able to disengage from a Kyle Kalis block in the middle to help make a tackle for a one-yard gain. He did get walled off on a couple of occasions, but he has flashed.”

Keim also reported that Hamilton has been calling plays for the No. 2 defense during Redskins camp.

Hamilton was selected by the Redskins in the sixth round of the 2018 NFL Draft. If the former Alabama linebacker returns to form after recovering from his second knee injury, then that could be a steal for Washington.

The Redskins have several former Crimson Tide players on defense. In addition to Hamilton, they have defensive end Jonathan Allen, linebacker Ryan Anderson and defensive tackle Daron Payne.
