AJ McCarron was as surprised as anybody with the way Alabama’s defense played at Tennessee in an an upset loss on Saturday.

The biggest mistake may have been Tennessee WR Jalin Hyatt making 6 catches for 207 yards and 5 touchdowns.

“I don’t think they realized he was playing,” McCarron said on the Week 7 recap show “The Wrap-Up.” “The guy was catching everything and scoring every time he got the ball. … Almost every time he caught the ball was a touchdown. Bama’s secondary was bad tonight. (Nick) Saban pointed it out, a lot of mistakes in the first half and those kind of really just spilled over unlike a Saban-esque defense. Really, no corrections were made from a player standpoint at halftime. They got beat down tonight.”

McCarron noted how Josh Heupel coaches the Tennessee wide receivers to be extremely wide on the field, which is unique around the country. He said that causes the defense to expand and makes defenders play a coverage where they’re not used to playing.

“It kind of plays tricks with the defense and I think that alignment of the receivers really caused the Alabama secondary a lot of problems,” McCarron said.
