Gardner Minshew has become something of a college football darling over the past month, keeping Washington State on the fringe of the College Football Playoff race and making a compelling Heisman Trophy push.

But, in response to a tweet by Pro Football Focus College, Alabama receivers coach and co-offensive coordinator Josh Gattis suggested that Minshew’s success is a product of the Cougars’ “dink and dunk offense.”

The original tweet featured a graphic showing adjusted completion percentage on throws of 20-plus yards downfield for five quarterbacks. Crimson Tide signal-caller Tua Tagovailoa topped the list at 63.4 percent, while Minshew was last with 56.4 percent.

Minshew and Washington State run the air raid, a system that has drawn criticism similar to Gattis’. Alabama, meanwhile, has adopted a more vertical downfield passing game with Tagovailoa, who is a heavy favorite to win the Heisman.

Maybe Gattis was just sticking up for his quarterback, but Tagovailoa’s stats already speak for themselves.
