Eight student-athletes enrolled at Alabama on Wednesday for the start of the spring semester, per Alabama’s athletics website. Highlighting the group are incoming freshman quarterback Blake Barnett and former Georgia defensive lineman Jonathan Taylor.

Among the other players enrolling are running back DeSherrius Flowers, safety Ronnie Harrison, offensive lineman Brandon Kennedy, running back Bo Kennedy, safety Deionte Thompson and offensive lineman Dallas Warmack. All will presumably take part in Alabama’s spring practices.

Barnett, the top quarterback recruit in the country, will give himself a boost in the 2015 quarterback competition by getting onto campus for spring practices. The Corono, Calif. native is listed as a dual-threat quarterback, and he could follow Blake Sims in breaking the mold of game-managing quarterbacks under Nick Saban.

Taylor’s enrollment will likely raise a few eyebrows. Georgia dismissed the former four-star recruit in July after his second arrest of 2014. He was charged with felony aggravated assault and family violence after allegedly assaulting his girlfriend. Previously, he had been charged with theft by deception after double-cashing his meal reimbursement checks. Taylor played the 2014 season at Copiah-Lincoln Community College in Mississippi.

Earlier in the fall, Nick Saban defended giving D.J. Pettway a second chance at Alabama, so bringing in Taylor fits with that. Pettway had been dismissed from the team in 2013 after a robbery charge, but Saban brought him back into the fold after a year away from the program.

Alabama released to a statement to Bleacher Report on Taylor’s enrollment.

Jonathan Taylor was admitted to The University of Alabama following the same procedures that the UA Admissions office uses to evaluate any student who has dealt with legal issues.  The admissions process includes representatives from academic, legal, student affairs, student conduct, UAPD and counseling.  Athletics is not involved in the admissions process.  Taylor’s continued enrollment depends on his ability to fulfill all requirements the University has specifically mandated for him during his time as a UA student.
