The only logical thing left to do is hand Alabama the trophy. Then again, Penn State is in the College Football Playoff mix, as is Wisconsin, so college football is unpredictable. Unless you’re predicting that Alabama will destroy anyone in its way.

Still, things have to play out and there is drama for the committee heading into Championship Week. It was a fairly mild Rivalry Saturday. Ohio State won to get in and most likely put Michigan out. Kentucky stomped the last gasp of air out of Louisville, something  Ohio State and Clemson have avoided week after week.

This week, a couple of teams not only need to win, they need to look good doing it, namely you Big Ten winner and Washington. Here’s the breakdown:

Alabama: The lone sure thing in the Playoff hunt, the Crimson Tide could get demolished by Florida in the SEC Championship Game and still waltz into the Playoff. That’s how good Alabama has been, and no team has been close. The teams vying to lose to Bama have all been shaky at best.

Ohio State: Like it or not, the Buckeyes are in after staving off Michigan and not playing in their conference championship. It may be a blessing to not play in the Big Ten title game, where a loss would certainly end Playoff hopes.

Penn State/Wisconsin: Staying in the Big Ten, these two may be looking at a win-and-get-in scenario. We really have no idea what the committee values, but the champion of the tough Big Ten has an argument. The final win will be against a Top 10 team and if it’s Penn State, that win over Ohio State is bigger by the day, despite a 39-point loss in Ann Arbor.

Clemson: The Tigers beat South Carolina but still need to beat Virginia Tech in the ACC title game. If they lose that, the door is open.

Washington: The Huskies looked good wrapping up the Pac 12 North against rival Washington State. If Clemson beats Virginia Tech and Penn State wins the Big Ten, the Huskies could still be left out of the Playoff. Or a win over Colorado may be what the committee is looking for from the Huskies. If Washington had not lost to USC, the conversation would be much different this week. The Huskies are the only hope for the Pac 12. Even if Colorado wins, it’s a stretch to see a path to the Playoff for the Buffaloes.

Oklahoma/Oklahoma State: Speaking of stretches, the Sooners and Cowboys have outside shots, albeit long ones. This rivalry will decide the Big 12, but unless it is a blowout and a couple of teams ahead of these two drop the ball, Oklahoma’s season-opening loss to Houston and Oklahoma State’s losses to Central Michigan and Baylor are resume killers.

Louisville: The Heisman trophy will have to suffice, and that’s no sure thing anymore either.
