As of Thursday, Alabama’s offensive staff knew which coach they would be gameplanning against in the season opener against Louisville in Orlando. However, things can change quickly in the world of college football.

Friday afternoon, Louisville announced defensive coordinator Peter Sirmon had resigned from his position with the program. It was a position Sirmon held for only one season after flip-flopping duties with former Louisville and Mississippi State DC Todd Grantham. Sirmon left Mississippi State after the 2016 season, his only season as an assistant in Starkville and was replaced by Grantham, who himself has since left MSU to run Florida’s defense under Dan Mullen.

Following the news, Louisville head coach Bobby Petrino issued a brief statement:

“I would like to thank Peter Sirmon for all of his work this season at the University of Louisville. I wish him and his family all the best.”

While Alabama will now face off against a first-year defensive coordinator for Louisville in the 2018 season opener, it’s difficult to say whether that’s a positive or a negative for the Tide. On the plus side, Louisville’s new DC won’t be as familiar with his players as Sirmon was. On the other hand, Alabama scored 51 on Sirmon’s Mississippi State defense in 2016.
