Cam Sims’ play is surprising.

On one hand, Sims had a quiet Alabama career, but he’s showing out right now with the Washington Redskins. Washington signed Sims as an undrafted free agent this year, and through two preseason games, Sims is making a major bid to make the team.

The 6-foot-5 pass catcher has great size, but he struggled with opportunity and injuries in college. He caught just 41 passes for 467 yards and two TDs during his four-year career. Of course, it’s easy to get lost when Calvin Ridley is on the field.

With 15 seconds left in Thursday night’s preseason game against the Jets, Sims made a spectacular catch to set up the game-winning field goal. Sims was draped by Jets’ cornerback Rashard Robinson when he made an incredible adjustment on the pass from QB Kevin Hogan for a 20-yard gain. The Redskins then made the 40-yard field goal to win 15-13.

Here’s another angle:

Earlier in the game, Sims made another spectacular TD catch that was called back because of an illegal formation penalty.

Even before Thursday night’s game, Sims was already on the verge of making the Redskins’ roster.

“He’s making a serious push to make this football team,” Redskins’ head coach Jay Gruden revealed earlier this week and before Thursday night’s game. “Another good showing Thursday night and another one the following week; I think he’s got a good chance.”

In two NFL preseason games, Sims has made five catches for 131 yards.
