Derrick Henry will officially be a Tennessee Titan in 2020.

That’s the good news but the star running back’s status moving forward is unclear after the Titans tendered Henry with the franchise tag this offseason.

According to ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter, Henry has decided to sign his franchise tag but is still working with the team towards a long-term extension. Signing the tag locks Henry in for another year in Nashville but the two sides could agree to a multi-year extension that voids the franchise tag offer.

The deadline for reaching a deal on a long-term extension is July 15. With little activity going on inside the Titans complex, working toward an extension with Henry is likely to be the franchise’s top priority once the 2020 NFL Draft is finished in late April.

Henry won the league rushing title last season when he rushed for 1,540 yards and 16 touchdowns during the regular season. As vital as he was to the Titan’s success last season, Henry’s real value to the franchise proved to be in the postseason.

The running back was given the ball 83 times for 446 yards in three playoff games before falling to the eventual Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC Championship Game.
