Alabama coach Nick Saban may seem like a grumpy guy on the sidelines and often times during press conferences, but he actually is very charitable off the field.

In fact, his generosity has stuck with legendary college basketball announcer Dick Vitale, who shared a memory of Saban’s charity during Saturday’s Alabama-Florida men’s basketball game.

When Alabama freshman sensation Collin Sexton made a beautiful play to get to the rim, Vitale laughed and said Saban should recruit him to the football team.

“He’d be some wide receiver. Maybe Nick Saban should go get him,” he joked.

Then, he recalled the act of generosity Saban showed to the V Foundation, which Vitale helps run in honor of his friend and former NC State coach Jim Valvano.

“Nick Saban. When the tornado hit (Tuscaloosa), he and his wife, Terry, I was told by people that they raised millions to help people,” Vitale said. “All I can tell you is, at my gala, when we honored Nick, his generosity, he was great to work with. He and his wife, Terry, sent me the most beautiful letter. Then, he put in the letter, and I hope I don’t embarrass him. He put in the little note that said ‘Dick, I’m so touched by those kids you people are raising money for battling cancer, I just want to give you a little to help your deal out.’ Sent us a check for $50,000.

“Nick Saban, nobody can knock him to me, man — he’s the best.”

Alabama cruised to an easy 68-50 road victory over the Gators, utilizing a huge second half.
