A recent article written by ESPN writer Adam Rittenberg details the potential head coaching openings for current Alabama offensive coordinator Lane Kiffin.

Kiffin has had a somewhat checkered and tumultuous coaching career. Part of the Pete Carroll tree at USC, Kiffin parlayed that experience into the role as head coach of the Oakland Raiders. He became the youngest NFL head coach in the modern era (dating back to 1946).

A one-year marriage ended in an incredibly messy divorce. Kiffin then went to Tennessee — before leaving after one season for the job at USC. A rough three-year period in Los Angeles saw Kiffin fired on the tarmac at Los Angeles International Airport following a loss to Arizona State.

He then leapt at the opportunity to coach under Nick Saban as the Crimson Tide’s offensive coordinator. So far, so good for the 41-year old — who’s done a solid job of rebuilding his image and repackaging his brand within this ultra-successful entity.

Controversy and intrigue will continue to follow Kiffin as he looks for another head coaching job. As Rittenberg writes in the piece, one Power 5 athletic director is still a bit skeptical Kiffin can make it work:

“At some point, he’s going to have to convince an AD that he’s learned and grown from his experience and the mistakes he’s made. Is that possible? Potentially.”

Another AD believes Kiffin can be successful at his next stop:

“He’s a good football coach. He’s smart and he presents himself extremely well. I would imagine he’s learned a lot. It’s all about the fit.”

Rittenberg listed South Florida, Houston, Georgia Tech and Fresno State as potential destinations. These speculations are simply that…speculations. South Florida, Houston, and Georgia Tech still currently employ head coaches.

Fresno State is Kiffin’s alma mater — although one has wonder whether he’d hold out for a more high-profile job.
