Dee Milliner did not have a good night.

On Thursday, the New York Jets hosted the Jacksonville Jaguars for the first preseason game of the 2016, finishing with a 17-13 win. And while there were several positives for Jets fans to hold onto leading into next week, Milliner was quite the opposite.

Milliner, who won two national championships with Alabama from 2010-12 before the Jets took him No. 9 overall in the first round of the 2013 NFL Draft, had a performance to forget, getting beat play after play by receivers Allen Robinson and Allen Hurns — one of them being a 45-yard gain on what amounted to a free play because of an offside penalty. He was clearly targeted multiple times by Jaguars quarterback Blake Bortles.

“He gave up an explosive play and missed a tackle that turned into an explosive [play],’’ coach Todd Bowles said, per the New York Post. “You can’t have explosion plays. … We’ve got to correct that.’’

Milliner’s career with New York seems to be on its last and final life. With three disappointing years in the books — he’s only played in 21 of the possible 48 games — he enters a pivotal season after the Jets declined to pick up the fifth-year option on his rookie contract.

“I gave up two explosion plays and I can’t let that happen,’’ Milliner said. “Most definitely I was upset about them because I should have made the plays. I’ve just got to make the plays when it’s my time. On [the 45-yard Robinson catch], I tried to go for the ball and he made a good catch, and then I had the missed tackle [on Washington]. Both of them were critical.’’

Injuries have also been a catalyst in Milliner’s many setbacks. A sprained ankle, torn Achilles tendon and an injured wrist wrecked his 2015 season, limiting him to special teams duty in five games. He has not played a regular-season defensive snap since October 2014.

As a rookie in 2013, Milliner started 12 games, finishing with 45 tackles, three interceptions and 19 pass deflections.
