The Earl Campbell Tyler Rose award is fairly new, but that doesn’t take away from what it represents.

The award recognizes nation’s top offensive player in Division I football, but that player also has to display quality characteristics such as integrity, performance, sportsmanship, drive, and teamwork. Another qualification is that nominees need to have either been born in Texas –or graduated from a high school in Texas — or played at a junior college or 4-year Division I college based in Texas.

In the four years since the award was created, no player from the SEC has ever won. Here are the previous winners of the award:

  • 2013: Bryce Petty, QB, Baylor
  • 2014: Trevone Boykin, QB, TCU
  • 2015: Greg Ward Jr., QB, Houston
  • 2016: D’Onta Foreman, RB, Texas

That could change this year, as Alabama’s Jalen Hurts (Channelview, Tex.) and Auburn’s Jarrett Stidham (Stephenville, Tex.) were both named as semifinalist for the award.

As if the Iron Bowl didn’t already have enough storylines, it now looks like both team’s quarterbacks will also be competing with each other off the field as well.

Here are the other semifinalists for the award:

J.T. Barrett, QB, Ohio State, Senior – Wichita Falls, TX (Rider HS) Big Ten
