Based on recent comments from Eagles coach Doug Pederson, it hasn’t taken long for Jalen Hurts to grasp the playbook in Philly.

Philadelphia made a bold decision by picking the former Oklahoma and Alabama quarterback in the second round of the 2020 NFL Draft this spring, especially when you consider the franchise is set to pay starting quarterback Carson Wentz over $100 million the next four seasons.

While the draft selection of Hurts may have been a head scratcher to many, Pederson is viewed by many as one of the best offensive minds in the NFL and has exhibited a very aggressive style of playcalling during his head coaching career. Adding a quarterback to the roster with Hurts’ ability must have been too tempting to pass up for the coach that led the Eagles to victory in Super Bowl LII.

Pederson hasn’t even had an opportunity to work with Hurts on the field yet, thanks to the coronavirus, but based on what he’s seen from the rookie NFL quarterback thus far during the QB’s early professional career, the Eagle coach has been impressed thus far.

“With Jalen, with young quarterbacks, you always have an idea or an understanding of where they are not only at the beginning of the offseason but at the end (as well),” Pederson said on Tuesday according to Eliot Shorr-Parks of 94 Wip Radio. “You take things slower with young players so they can understand the terminology, they can call a play in the huddle, and then teach them everything else that goes along with it.

“The one thing, as we have talked about even in this (press conference) here, is not having him on the grass. His growth from a mental standpoint from the beginning of the offseason to now has been very good. His ability to recall plays and recite plays…one thing (quarterbacks coach) Press Taylor has done is put him into a huddle situation where he is calling plays and being able to spit that back at him. He has done that at a really good, high level. Now it is just a matter of once we get him on the grass, he has to do it for real and go from there. But I have been really impressed with his progress this spring.”

Now we will all have to wait to see how the Eagles plan to use Hurts this fall during his debut season in the NFL. Based on how high the Eagles took Hurts in the draft, the franchise has big plans for one of the most intriguing quarterback prospects to enter the NFL in several years.
