Despite holding at No. 2 in the latest College Football Playoff ranking, ESPN’s Kirk Herbstreit is less than convinced by Alabama.

The Crimson Tide, 8-1 on the year and 5-1 in SEC play, appear to be the closest of anyone to the unbeaten and top-ranked Georgia Bulldogs in the eyes of the CFP committee. They opened No. 2 in the first set of rankings and stayed there after a 20-14 win over an embattled LSU team last Saturday. For much of the season, the conversation has centered around who has what it takes to make a run at Georgia?

Herbstreit, speaking on the Paul Finebaum Show Wednesday, said he didn’t think that team was Alabama.

“I don’t know if they can climb the mountain and beat Georgia,” Herbstreit said. “Everything that makes a great team elite, Georgia has that.”

The Bulldogs have dominated opponents so far this season, winning by an average of more than 30 points a game. No team has scored more than 13 points against the Georgia defense and the offense has been able to hit 30 every week since the 10-3 season-opening win over Clemson.

Alabama has, at times, looked vulnerable in the eyes of some. Herbstreit said on Tuesday that he didn’t feel it was a given the Tide would even make the SEC championship game and get a shot at Georgia. “Bama is a talented team,” he said, “but they are a beatable team.”

The Tide face New Mexico State on Saturday with kickoff slated for noon on the SEC Network.
