Luke Del Rio didn’t have a very long Alabama career, walking on to the team back in 2013 before transferring to Oregon State in 2014. He eventually landed at Florida, where he finished his college career.

Despite only being with the Crimson Tide for one year, Del Rio has some memorable experiences from that one season in Tuscaloosa.

Del Rio appeared on “The On Q Podcast” with former Florida teammate and fellow QB Austin Appleby this week and told the story of a time he accidentally overthrew star WR Amari Cooper and, of course, drilled coach Nick Saban in the thigh. Del Rio said he couldn’t believe his bad luck as he watched the throw sail over Cooper’s head:

“I launch it,” Del Rio said. “I think, ‘Oh damn, I overthrew it.’ I overthrew it so bad that he stopped running completely, didn’t even try to stick an arm out. Just stopped. Saban is still walking to get to 40-45 yards and I see the trajectory of the ball and I think ‘Oh my god — no, no, no, no, no.’ Saban gets to 40-45 yards and boom.

“I nailed him right on the thigh. Right next to, you know, that area. I don’t hit it. I hit his leg but right about there.”

Del Rio recalls that Saban simply stopped the practice early, glaring at Del Rio during the post-practice talk:

“He stops practice,” Del Rio said. “Like ends it. It was the last period but I knew he stopped it prematurely.”

Of course, Del Rio didn’t just cut his losses after that. Instead, he remembers, he had a smart response to the coach when called out for his errant throw:

“Well coach, at least you’ll remember me for that,'” he recalled saying afterward.

Del Rio ended up transferring to Oregon State the next year and then to Florida the year after that, where he just ended his college career after an injury-plagued 2017 season.
