After making the decision to trade up for the No. 3 overall selection in the 2021 NFL Draft, the San Francisco 49ers may publicly be backing quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo, but there’s little chance the franchise traded up in the draft (a move that costs three first-round picks) to select anything other than a signal-caller.

The mystery surrounding which quarterback the 49ers desire the most will likely remain unknown until the very moment Rodger Goodell announces the team’s selection at the 2021 NFL Draft but early indications suggest the player rising up the board could be Mac Jones.

Urban Meyer has come out and confirmed the Jaguars are planning to select Trevor Lawrence with the No. 1 overall pick and the new Jacksonville coach didn’t even travel to watch BYU’s Pro Day to get a look at Zach Wilson.

If the Jets select Wilson at No. 2, that would leave the rest of the draft board completely open to the 49ers to select any player remaining.

Read into this what you will but Alabama and Ohio State are each set to hold Pro Days on Tuesday, which would give the 49ers an opportunity to scout Jones or Justin Fields in person.

According to Peter King of NBC Sports, 49ers GM John Lynch and head coach Kyle Shanahan plan to watch Jones throw at Alabama’s Pro Day instead of heading to Ohio State to watch Fields.

Could San Francisco move all the way up to No. 3 to take Jones? SEC Network analyst Chris Doering makes the case for why that move would make sense for the 49ers if Jones can successfully make the transition from college football to the NFL.
