Former Alabama QB Mac Jones continues to impress this preseason with the New England Patriots. On Sunday, he looked very much the part of a capable quarterback in the NFL.

Jones started 8-for-12 passing for 139 yards and a 17-yard touchdown to Isaiah Zuber in the third quarter, where he connected with Zuber between 3 defenders. Although Jones was sacked twice, Jones had considerably more action early in the game than Cam Newton, who was 2-for-5 passing.

Earlier this week, Jones got extended time with the starters after Newton was out because of COVID-19 protocols.

Jones was taken in the first round despite Newton starting 15 games last season. He was then signed to a one-year deal in the offseason. That all setup the competition and even coach Bill Belichick admitted that Jones was among those who had a chance to improve his position.

“Our entire team has opportunities every day, all through the week and against the Giants in the game,” Belichick said. “I hope we can all take advantage of those opportunities.”
