Jahleel Billingsley hasn’t spent a great deal of time on the field this year. And once again, it appears that Nick Saban isn’t pleased with his production, or lack thereof.

Billingsley missed some time in preseason camp, with Saban sending a message that the Texas native needed to fully embrace “the principles and values of the team”. The junior tight end would later play briefly against Florida and recorded a 26-yard touchdown against the Gators, while bringing in 5 receptions for 105 yards and a score the next week against Southern Miss. He then made 4 catches for 46 yards against Ole Miss on Oct. 2. Outside of that, he has just 1 catch for 8 yards, coming in the game against Tennessee on Oct. 23.

Saban was asked about Billingsley’s progress on Wednesday, and he responded candidly.

“When a guy has opportunities, he’s got to take advantage of them,” he said, according to AL.com’s Mike Rodak. “He’s got to play fast. You can’t drop the ball. Yeah, do we miss his production? Yeah. But when he gets the opportunities, he’s got to take advantage of them.”

Saban added that he expects Billingsley to be able to contribute down the stretch as the Crimson Tide chase a College Football Playoff berth, but it would be up to how he practiced and performed.

“He’s certainly a guy that can help us in some kind of way,” he said. “We need him to sort of go out there and play like he’s capable of playing, and that’s certainly our responsibility as coaches to try to get him to do that.”
