One of the best things about college football is the debates that annually range on any number of topics. One such debate that gains more traction each time Alabama wins a title under Nick Saban is who is the sport’s greatest coach of all time?

If you ask Paul Finebaum of the SEC Network, if Alabama wins Monday night and Saban captures his sixth championship, the debate needs to end.

While six is the same number of national championships won by Paul “Bear” Bryant, Finebaum believes what Saban has been able to accomplish in the modern era of college football is unrivaled. During his weekly Monday morning appearance on WJOX 94.5 FM program The Opening Drive, Finebaum was asked the significance of Nick Saban tying Bear Bryant with six titles and in such a short span of time?

“You know how we all feel about Coach Bryant — I covered the end of his career,” Finebaum said on the air. “I feel fortunate to have been able to do that but if Nick Saban wins tonight, there really shouldn’t be a debate about the greater accomplishment or the greater coach because of the circumstances. No one has ever done anything like this. I think you have to put down the sword and quit arguing.”

Finebaum also believes that another title would leave the Alabama coach questioning when his time to retire may come.

“It will be interesting to see what Nick Saban does, too,” he continued. “He’s very aware of his place in history and I know the debate rages in the back corner of Alabama coffee shops and bars — how long will he go? I don’t know. No one does.”

If Saban manages to tie Bryant’s record for national championships Monday night, which coach would you consider to be the best?
