New details have emerged in the weekend DUI arrest of Alabama defensive lineman Da’Shawn Hand.

Hand was arrested on Saturday and held on $1,000 bond after being charged with a DUI. It is now being reported by Tide Sports that Hand was in fact not driving his vehicle but was asleep in his parked car at the time of his arrest.

This does not mean the arrest was unwarranted. Aaron Suttles reports:

“According to Alabama state law, Hand was deemed to be in ‘constructive possession’ of the vehicle, and although he wasn’t driving and the vehicle was parked, the keys being in the car was the determinant that triggered the arrest.”

This new information could have an impact on Nick Saban’s plan of discipline for Hand. Paul Finebaum has already been very critical of Saban’s discipline tactics, but it seems unlikely that a full-game suspension should be the course of action in this case. Hand certainly made a mistake, but it should be a positive sign that he was not operating his vehicle at the time of the arrest.
