Controversy followed Lane Kiffin during his time as Alabama’s offensive coordinator, just as it did at all of his previous coaching spots. So, unsurprisingly, it has followed him to his new job as FAU’s head coach.

On Wednesday morning, it was reported that a former Alabama wide receiver, Antonio Carter, is suing Kiffin, FAU and the state of Florida for fraud after he was told he had a job with the Owls.

According to SEC Country, Carter believes his relationship with a prized recruit led Kiffin and FAU to string him along with the promise of a job:

“The prospect’s family had just celebrated New Year’s Eve together with Plaintiff Antonio Carter and his family just a few weeks earlier,” the lawsuit states. “It is believed that this relationship between Plaintiff Antonio Carter and the coveted prospect was known to the coaches and defendants at the time he was hired.”

However, the school refused to hire him after he failed a background check, according to the report. Then, after repeated attempts to clear his name went unanswered, Carter decided to file the lawsuit.

Carter and his wife quit their jobs to move to Florida once Kiffin assured him that the position — as an assistant strength and conditioning coach — was locked down.

Kiffin hasn’t even coached a game for FAU yet, but that hasn’t stopped him from making headlines. The lawsuit will be interesting to follow as the offseason moves along.
