Former Alabama coach Gene Stallings began a three-day stretch of speaking engagements in Huntsville on Tuesday night as he joined former Auburn coach Pat Dye for the Huntsville Quarterback Club Kickoff Meeting at The Ledges.

The two 78-year old’s have teamed up for several speaking engagements over the years and have become fairly close friends.

“Coach Stallings and I weren’t rivals; Alabama and Auburn were,” Dye said, via AL.com. “We’ve got a great friendship. We have a good time every time we get together.”

At the event, they touched on topics such as how their former teams were looking in fall camp, what Nick Saban’s legacy was going to be and of course, the Alabama quarterback battle between Tua Tagovailoa and Jalen Hurts.

“Can you imagine having two quarterbacks like that on the same team? Lord, have mercy,” said Stallings. “People talk about it being a problem. I can’t imagine that being a problem for anybody. Players are going to compete as well as they can. They’re going to make them play a little bit better than they ordinarily would, so what a joy to have those two guys on the same team.”

Coach Dye also agreed that it was a pretty interesting situation.

“Coach (Nick) Saban will handle it the way it’s supposed to be handled,” he said. “I would think that he would just let them compete and whoever is the best quarterback in practice is going to play. It’s a pretty unique situation where you’ve got a guy like (Jalen) Hurts, who has been as good as he’s been. He actually won two national championships; the defense lost one of them. He did everything that he had to do. He got it down the field; they just scored too quick.”

Most seem to think that Tagovailoa has already won the job, but Nick Saban surely won’t announce it until right before kickoff.
