Mac Jones and the New England Patriots are rolling. They’re now on a 5-game winning streak after their 25-0 victory over the Atlanta Falcons on Thursday night, and Jones is having an impressive rookie year.

However, the Pats’ defense has been dominant. So how much of an impact is Jones himself having on the team’s overall success?

That was a topic debated by Stephen A. Smith and Tim Tebow on ESPN’s “First Take” on Friday. And Smith started it off by questioning whether Jones is a key reason for New England’s current run.

“I’m just saying he’s a rookie, all right? He’s a product of the system that he’s playing in,” Smith said. “He limits mistakes, he knows where to go with the football. He’s got talent, I’m not taking anything away from him. But it’s about that defense. It’s about how opportunistic that defense is. That’s what really has the Patriots where the Patriots are right now.”

Tebow disagreed. He believes the former Alabama QB is a major part of New England’s recent surge.

“In this 5-game winning streak, Mac Jones has been top 10 in the NFL,” Tebow said. “Mac Jones is doing a really good job. And there wouldn’t be another top-10 quarterback that you’d say their team doesn’t win because of them. … Yes, they can win because of Mac Jones. He doesn’t make mistakes, he takes what the defense gives him, he’s incredibly smart, incredibly accurate. And he doesn’t hurt their team.”

Through 11 games, Jones has passed for 2,540 yards, 14 touchdowns and 8 interceptions. He’ll likely continue to improve as he gains experience, as he’s still early in his NFL career.
