For the first time in his NFL career, former Alabama running back Derrick Henry no longer has to work in the shadow of DeMarco Murray. In fact, it appears the Tennessee Titans see Henry as their lead running back in 2018.

Earlier this offseason, the Tennessee released Murray. The team signed veteran running back Dion Lewis away from the New England Patriots after releasing Murray, leaving some question as who would be the Titans primary ball-carrier. The question lingered as Titans offensive coordinator Matt LaFleur referred to the two running backs as “1A and 1B.”

According to Tennessee Titans senior writer Jim Wyatt, Henry will enter preseason as the lead running back on the team’s depth chart. While the early designation is a good sign for Henry, the Heisman winner still has plenty of work to do. As Wyatt writes, the distribution of carries between Henry and Lewis – whether 50-50, 60-40 or 70-30 – will likely be decided in the preseason.

Henry led the Titans in rushing yards (744) and rushing touchdowns (5) last season, logging 176 carries to Murray’s 184.
