As former Alabama RB Trent Richardson tried to get his NFL career back on track, he showed some flashes of brilliance for the Saskatchewan Roughriders in the Canadian Football League.

However, his CFL career appears to be over, as the Roughriders released the ex-Crimson Tide standout this week.

At the end of this video posted by the Roughriders this week, head coach Chris Jones discusses the release of Richardson, citing the former Alabama star’s desire to be closer to his family:

“I talked to Jimmy Sexton, his agent, and I talked to Trent, and it was a situation where he’s got four young children at home, and he’s been in a custody situation and Trent’s a really, really good dude,” Jones said. “He’s a good dad, and the opportunity arose for him to take a job with the Birmingham team, possibly, or Alabama — I think it’s Birmingham — team in the AAF, that new league. So it was an opportunity for him to go down there and make a living. They wouldn’t allow him to cross the border up here and keep his children.”

Richardson has yet to be announced as a player on the Birmingham roster, but it would seem to be just a matter of time, as he’d be a big-name player, especially in the state of Alabama.

For now, though, Richardson is in a wait-and-see mode as fans await news of his next career move.
