Last year, Alabama had Trevon Diggs try his hand at returning punts, but that didn’t go so well.

Now, Diggs has transitioned from wide receiver to defensive back, where he’s a key contributor for the Tide’s defense.

These days, freshman WR Jaylen Waddle handles the punt returning, and Diggs has been impressed by what he’s seen from the elusive freshman (via AL.com):

“He’s amazing.” Diggs said. “He’s a really great talent. I’ve never seen nothing like it, honestly. He reminds me kind of a Tavon Austin, sort of a punt return/receiver.”

Comparing him to Austin, who is now with the Dallas Cowboys, is high praise for Waddle, as Austin was an absolute beast at West Virginia.

So far, Waddle is averaging just under 20 yards per punt return, and has one touchdown. He’s also added two scores as a receiver. The sky’s the limit for the young freshman, and he’s showing flashes of brilliance already.
