There is currently a lot of smoke out there suggesting the Dolphins would considering taking Justin Herbert over Tua Tagovailoa if both players are on the board when it’s time for Miami to make the No. 5 selection in the 2020 NFL Draft.

Of course, the fact that all the speculation is out there doesn’t necessarily mean that move is going to happen, either.

This is the time of year speculation and rumors are floated out and it’s wise to take everything you hear with a grain of salt when it comes to the NFL Draft. Miami very well could want this information out there to ensure other teams don’t trade up into the top 4 to selection Tagovailoa.

At the same time, Matt Miller of Bleacher Report, Albert Breer of the MMQB and now Mel Kiper Jr. are all suggesting that Herbert is rising up the draft charts and Tagovailoa may be fading as we inch closer to the 2020 NFL Draft.

In a recent ESPN 2020 NFL Draft mailbag, Kiper was asked if Miami would select another quarterback even if Tua Tagovailoa was available to be taken when the time comes for the Dolphins to make their No. 5 overall selection in the coming draft:

“Yes, of course, and that’s what puts the Dolphins in such a great position. They have three first-round picks (Nos. 5, 18 and 26) and two second-round picks (Nos. 39 and 56), which means they have the capital to trade up to get their guy, or wait it out if they like Justin Herbert or Jordan Love.

“What’s going against Tagovailoa right now is that the Dolphins can’t do an in-person checkup with their team doctor (the latest reports are that Tagovailoa has recovered from his hip and ankle injuries) because of the travel restrictions as part of the coronavirus pandemic. Prospects can only do virtual visits with teams, and that could have an effect on guys who are rehabbing injuries.”

According to all reports, the Dolphins have spent a considerable amount of time investigating Tagovailoa leading up to the 2020 NFL Draft. Read into that what you will but if all these analysts are correct and Miami is considering passing on Tua, that would suggest the Dolphins aren’t happy with the feedback they’ve been given when it comes to the former Alabama signal-caller.
