Kirby Smart will reportedly become Georgia’s next head coach in a few days. But his current boss wouldn’t confirm that on Wednesday.

Alabama head coach Nick Saban was asked about his defensive coordinator’s potential move to the Bulldogs during his weekly news conference, and he refused to talk about it.

Instead, according to al.com, he picked up a bottle of Coca-Cola that was sitting on the podium, and told reporters to ask the bottle about Smart.

“I don’t have anything else to say about it,” Saban said. “So don’t ask. There is no more. I know you would like to some kind of way extract something out of this bottle that’s not there. It’s not there. You all speculate and create things and then you want people to respond to it. You can get this bottle to respond to it because I don’t know anything more about it. I told you everything I know, so you can ask the bottle but don’t ask me.”

For the record, the Coca-Cola bottle said nothing.

The questions about Smart put Saban in a difficult situation. Smart has not been officially hired by Georgia yet, and if the Bulldogs do hire him (as expected) it won’t be until after the SEC Championship Game. So Saban really can’t comment on the departure of a coach who hasn’t officially announced he’s leaving yet.

He’s also more focused on Saturday’s game with Florida.

“I think everybody in this building is very focused on what we’re trying to do for our team because, regardless of what anybody’s opportunities are in the future, all those things get enhanced by us playing well in this game,” Saban said. “So I think that’s what everybody’s focus should be and I have no doubt about anybody in our organization focusing on this.”

Saban did admit that he’d spoken to the team about the situation.

“The coaches really care about the players and the players care about the coaches,” Saban said. “And if you really care about the coaches and you know a guy’s done a great job and he’s worked real hard to create another opportunity for himself, you ought to be happy for him. You shouldn’t be worried about it. You shouldn’t be concerned about it.

“And you should also know that we’ve had this situation in the past and we seem to bring the next best coach in, so you’ll continue to get good coaching and help you develop as a football player. So I think the players kinda get it.”

After that, he told the media not to ask him any more questions about his defensive coordinator.

Second-ranked Alabama (11-1) faces No. 18 Florida (10-2) in the SEC Championship Game on Saturday in Atlanta. The game will be shown on CBS at 4 p.m. ET.
