College football has a number of great rivalries, but few measure up to the Iron Bowl. Crimson Tide fans know it. Tigers fans know it. Even fans of other teams admit that Alabama-Auburn is on another level.

AL.com’s Lauren Sisler recently caught up with Alabama AD Greg Byrne for a wide-ranging conversation. One of the last questions she asks is what sets the Iron Bowl apart from college football’s other rivalries.

“What sets it apart is 365 days a year,” Byrne said. “You are either Alabama or you’re Auburn. It’s different. The passion that’s there is not matched anywhere else. So it’s something that we embrace. We want to make sure that we do it respectfully and do it the right way. At the same time, too, we want to beat them in everything we do and do that for many years to come.”

It sounds like Byrne has a good understanding of the culture in Tuscaloosa and the rest of the Yellowhammer state.
