Arkansas again had a fourth quarter lead and was on the verge of a program-defining win, only to see its lead slip away late.

Here are the five biggest takeaways from last night’s heartbreaking defeat for the Hogs.

Different melody, same song: Stop me if you’re heard this before. Arkansas plays a strong first half, competing with a better team. Hogs get a couple of breaks and find themselves with a lead early into the fourth quarter. Mistakes cause that lead to slowly slip away making Razorback fans wish of what could’ve been. Sound familiar? It happened again on Saturday night against the Crimson Tide. Strong defensive play throughout, coupled with a clutch third quarter touchdown pass from Brandon Allen to A.J. Derby caused the Hogs to find themselves with a one-point lead late. That lead would vanish on the ensuing drive giving the Tide the win.

Alex Collins’ absence proved costly: It was announced after the game that tailback Alex Collins sat during the first half due to missing a workout during the off week. His absence would prove impactful as the Hogs had no success rushing the football. The Razorbacks vaunted running game totaled just 89 yards rushing on 39 attempts. Collins managed just 13 yards on six carries in the time he did see, but never was able to find his groove.

Arkansas’ defense is stout: They surrendered the go-ahead touchdown late, but the Arkansas defense kept the Hogs in the game all night. The Hogs forced two turnovers and allowed just 227 total yards of offense. Again, Amari Cooper, T.J. Yeldon and Derrick Henry were non-impact players for the Crimson Tide that needed all four quarters to bury the Hogs. Trey Flowers wreaked havoc on the Alabama backfield all night and is a player whose stock continues to rise.

Mistakes continue to haunt Brandon Allen: Brandon Allen had another mediocre performance under center for Arkansas, and late mistakes and bad decisions continue to haunt the Hogs signal caller. He completed 21 of 40 passes for 246 yards and a score, but a late interception killed a drive and any comeback hopes the Razorback faithful had. Allen had questionable decision-making down the stretch, however, being flushed out of the pocket often and failing to make it through his progressions.

Missed opportunities abound: The Razorbacks fumbled on four of its first half possessions, killing drives that could’ve resulted in points. Arkansas also dropped a several would-be interceptions throughout this game that could’ve let to potential scoring drives, but instead kept Alabama drives alive. If the Hogs want to put away more talented teams, it has to take advantage of the chances its given.
