Arkansas is currently in a bowl drought. Having not played in a bowl since the 2016 season, the Razorbacks were set to change that as they were scheduled to play in the Texas Bowl on Thursday. But now, that game has been canceled.

So, this will be the fourth straight season in which Arkansas won’t appear in a bowl. That brings a question — when was the last time the Razorbacks went this long without playing a bowl game?

As Andrew Hutchinson of Rivals.com pointed out on Tuesday, the last time Arkansas went four straight seasons without a bowl appearance came from 1955-58. That was so long ago that most of that stretch came before longtime head coach Frank Broyles was hired in 1958.

Hutchinson also noted that means every senior class at Arkansas since then has gotten to play in a bowl game, as long as they stayed at the school for all four years.

For some of the current seniors, they won’t get another opportunity to do so. However, the NCAA is giving all players an extra year of eligibility due to the uncertainty of playing the 2020 season amid the COVID-19 pandemic. So, some Arkansas seniors will be back in 2021, including several who have announced they intend to do so, such as running back T.J. Hammonds, tight end Blake Kern and more.

Arkansas’ last bowl appearance was the 2016 Belk Bowl, which it lost, 35-24, to Virginia Tech. Its last bowl win came in the 2015 Liberty Bowl, in which it defeated Kansas State, 45-23.

The Razorbacks went 3-7 this season, their first under new head coach Sam Pittman. And while they had some bright spots early on, they ended the year on a four-game losing streak. They’ll look to build off the positives and get back into a bowl game in 2021.
