John Chavis has been an SEC defensive coordinator since 1995, and whether that streak continues appears to be entirely up to him.

Chavis is nearing the end of his one-year deal with Arkansas, though he has the option for a two-year extension as part of his contract. The Razorbacks assistant was asked Monday if he had informed coach Chad Morris of his decision.

“I haven’t told Chad that, but he and I will have a talk, and I’m not going to make an announcement,” Chavis told reporters (via HawgBeat.com, Rivals’ Arkansas website). “I’m at Arkansas, and I think that’s enough said. I plan on being here a while.”

It sounds like Chavis wants to return, which would be a boon for a Razorbacks squad that ranks 10th in the SEC in total defense (407.5 yards per game) and 13th in scoring defense (32.7 points per game). Arkansas has had some good defensive performance, though, like when it held Texas A&M and LSU to 24 points apiece and pitched a shutout against Tulsa.

Chavis got his first defensive coordinator gig at Tennessee (1995-2008) before moving on to fellow SEC schools LSU (2009-14) and Texas A&M (2015-17).

If his comments Monday are any indication, it looks like he’ll remain in the SEC for at least a few more years.
