As the Arkansas coaching staff waits on the dominoes to fall from a new head coach, one Razorback assistant is reportedly in the running for a head coaching job.

Richard Davenport of the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette reported: “Arkansas associate HC & RB coach Jeff Traylor expected to interview for Lamar HC position, according to source.”

Traylor came to Arkansas with Chad Morris from SMU, and previous coached at Texas after he was a high school coach in east Texas. At Gilmer High School, his alma mater, Traylor had a 175-26 record with 3 state championships and 2 state runner-up finishes. At Arkansas, his title was associate head coach and running backs coach.

Traylor played football at Stephen F. Austin as a walk-on.

Mike Schultz was fired at Lamar one season after Lamar made its first FCS playoff appearance in school history, the Beaumont Enterprise reported. Lamar’s decision came 2 days after the Cardinals’ 27-3 loss to McNeese State University in the season finale. It ended 4-8 this past season that saw Lamar win just 2 Southland Conference games. Schultz was 13-22 at Lamar.

AD Marco Born specifically cited his wish to hire a coach with “Texas ties,” but said he expects national interest.

“I think there will be a lot of interest in the job,” Born said. “I think it’s a top 3 job from where we’re located in the Golden Triangle, the town that’s here, our facilities and our budgets. I think there will be a ton of interest from all over country, in my opinion.”
