An Arkansas icon was remembered for many contributions during a life as a championship football coach, athletics director and mentor to many.

There was a memorial celebration for Frank Broyles on Saturday at Bud Walton Arena to remember the man who recently died after of Alzheimer’s disease. The ceremony was also posted on YouTube by Whole Hog Sports.

Broyles, who led the Arkansas Razorbacks to their lone football national championship and later served as the athletic director for more than 40 years, died Monday. He was 92. In front of a stage that included a portrait of Broyles wearing a red blazer, there was a large arrangement of roses.

Under the coaching of Broyles, Arkansas was 144-58-5 from 1958-76. In 1973, he became athletics director until 2007. His post-coaching career included being an analyst for ABC college football telecasts with Keith Jackson.

Among the other notable accomplishments mentioned at the service was that Broyles’ assistant coaches went on to coach in eight Super Bowls and won six, won five national championships, 2,000 victories and 40 conference titles. That’s one reason why the Broyles Award is an annual award given to the best assistant coach in college football.

Among the speakers at the memorial was Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones, who was a member of the 1964 undefeated team. Jones said Broyles gave him the vision to build AT&T Stadium.
